A statistical hypothesis test is a method of making statistical decisions using experimental data. In statistics, a result is called statistically significant if it is unlikely to have occurred by chance. The phrase "test of significance" was coined by Ronald Fisher: "Critical tests of this kind may be called tests of significance, and when such tests are available we may discover whether a second sample is or is not significantly different from the first."

Hypothesis testing is sometimes called confirmatory data analysis, in contrast to exploratory data analysis. In frequency probability, these decisions are almost always made using null-hypothesis tests; that is, ones that answer the question Assuming that the null hypothesis is true, what is the probability of observing a value for the test statistic that is at least as extreme as the value that was actually observed? One use of hypothesis testing is deciding whether experimental results contain enough information to cast doubt on conventional wisdom.

Statistical hypothesis testing is a key technique of frequentist statistical inference, and is widely used, but also much criticized. The main direct alternative to statistical hypothesis testing is Bayesian inference. However, other approaches to reaching a decision based on data are available via decision theory and optimal decisions.

The critical region of a hypothesis test is the set of all outcomes which, if they occur, will lead us to decide that there is a difference. That is, cause the null hypothesis to be rejected in favor of the alternative hypothesis. The critical region is usually denoted by C.

Help in significance&statistical hypothesis testing
Q. I need help in significance & hypothesis testing in Statistics so if any of you are awesome at this field, please please please please send me an email to help me out w/ this whole tangled thing! thanks a lot!!!

A. [Answer: If you have a problem with a certain question, just post it here and someone will respond to you. The general idea for hypothesis testing is that you set your alternative and then your null hypothesis (assume the null is true until you can reject it). Conduct your test using whatever test statistic you need (z, t, F, etc.) and then state a conclusion. ]

What kind of hypothesis testing question is this?
Q. A market analyst states the mean number of statistical references per article in business journals is 7. Alex states her choice of four journals significantly reduces the amount of statistics she has to "fight through to get to the important stuff." To support this she conducts and appropriate hypothesis test. Does the evidence support her hypothesis that her choice of journals carries significantly fewer statistical references? I dont understand what type of hypothesis testing I should use. Does this question make since to anyone else? I'm given data about her journals but Im not sure where to go from here... any help?

A. You need to test to see if the sample of 4 journals is staistically significant to base your conclusions on see:

How does the central limit theorem relate to statistical inference?
Q. I need to understand how the central limit theorem ties into confidence intervals and hypothesis tests. Thanks.

A. If you have a large sample size (~>=30), you can use the central limit theorem to say the resulting distribution is approximately normally distributed. You can then use Z- or t-tables to calculate the confidence intervals or use Z- or t-statistics in hypothesis tests.
