In mathematics, a percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100 (per cent meaning "per hundred"). It is often denoted using the percent sign, "%". For example, 45% (read as "forty-five percent") is equal to 45 / 100, or 0.45.

Percentages are used to express how large one quantity is, relative to another quantity. The first quantity usually represents a part of, or a change in, the second quantity, which should be greater than zero. For example, an increase of $ 0.15 on a price of $ 2.50 is an increase by a fraction of 0.15 / 2.50 = 0.06. Expressed as a percentage, this is therefore a 6% increase.

Although percentages are usually used to express numbers between zero and one, any dimensionless proportionality can be expressed as a percentage. For instance, 111% is 1.11 and −0.35% is −0.0035.

Proportions

Percentages are correctly used to express fractions of the total. For example, 25% means 25 / 100, or one quarter, of some total.

Percentages larger than 100 can be meant literally (such as "a family must earn at least 125% over the poverty line to sponsor a spouse visa").

What percent of my gross income will I keep?
Q. I'm currently married with 1 child. I just started a new position and decided to file Married with 0 dependents. Does anyone anyone know what percent of my gross salary check will be taken out for taxes? I live in California... Thanks... Tax experts only please.
Asked by The Therapist - Sun May 4 23:53:38 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. if you know how much you are going to be making, you can go to paycheckcity.com and use their calculators to estimate how much tax will be taken out. Just choose the basic, then paycheck calculator and fill in the information. Generally it's about 15 percent of your income of which taxes are taken out, including state, federal, social security and sometimes state disability--but this ranges (higher or lower) from what you make and how many dependents you claim on your W-4 form.

What percent of the medieval population was merchants?
Q. In the medieval times, there were merchants, what percent of the population were they?
Asked by Saira A - Mon Feb 2 22:52:32 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A tiny percentage since in medieval times only a few towns had independence from the feudal system. Almost everyone selling stuff was making it and was a journeyman or master in the guild system or a "servant" in a household like the horse master, seamstress, etc. You didn't wander down to a shop and look through a selection of prepared goods, you discussed materials and perhaps looked at samples or sample drawings and it was made for you. The names of specialty makers go on and on - felters, men's hats, ladies hats, narrow knitters for scarves, etc.

How can I find the percent calcite of a rock using expirimentation?
Q. I need to find the percent calcite using chemistry expiriments. If you know of any or where I can find them please let me know. I figure I could weigh the rock first then dissolve the calcite and weigh it afterwards to get the percent calcite but I would like to know how I could do this and get an accurate answer.
Asked by Caveman - Sun Apr 12 18:55:58 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Dissolving and weighing wouldn't be accurate because of the variations in mineral densities: you would need to know all other components and their relative percentages. There may also be other soluble minerals in that rock. Scientific method would be to take a slice and physically count the calcite as a proportion of total rock.
