Society or human society is the set of relations among people, including their social status and roles. By extension, society denotes the people of a region or country, sometimes even the world, taken as a whole. Used in the sense of an association, a society is a body of individuals outlined by the bounds of functional interdependence, possibly comprising characteristics such as national or cultural identity, social solidarity, language or hierarchical organization. Human societies are characterized by patterns of relationships between individuals sharing a distinctive culture and institutions. Like other communities or groups, a society allows its members to achieve needs or wishes they could not fulfill alone.

A society, however, may be ontologically independent of, and utterly irreducible to, the qualities of constituent individuals; it may act to oppress. The urbanization and rationalization inherent in some, particularly Western capitalist, societies, has been associated with feelings of isolation and social "anomie".

More broadly, a society is an economic, social or industrial infrastructure, made up of a varied collection of individuals. Members of a society may be from different ethnic groups. A society may be a particular ethnic group, such as the Saxons; a nation state, such as Bhutan; a broader cultural group, such as a Western society. The word society may also refer to an organized voluntary association of people for religious, benevolent, cultural, scientific, political, patriotic, or other purposes. A "society" may even, though more by means of metaphor, refer to a social organism such as an ant colony.

Is Spanish Honor Society important on a college application? What are good things to put on an application?
Q. Do you have a better chance of getting into a good college for businees (as I am planning to do) if you have Spanish Honor Society on your list. Some other things I am planning to receive and put on my application are National Honor Society, Key Club (volunteer work), Student Council, and Eagle Scout. Sorry Spanish Honor Society is basically that in 7 semesters (Freshman through half of Senior year) you got at least 4 A's and 3 B's.

A. The most important parts of your application are your grades and how challenging your course load was. Spanish Honor Society probably isn't going to sway the decision on whether or not to admit you, but it is definitely something you should include in your application. Proficiency in other languages is definitely a plus. Not every high school has a Spanish Honor Society so you could provide a brief explanation in your resume. Give specific details as to what you did in each of your activities.

What matters more, the needs of society or the rights or indivduals?
Q. In an orderly dictatorship, the needs of society are met with what the western world has deemed cruel and unusual punishment. They have lower crime rates, but people (apparently) live in fear. In democratic nations, we tend to value the rights of the individual more. I always hear about appaling things in the news, but the criminal can get off because their rights were violated. Where do we draw the line? I believe the rights of individuals are important, but the needs of society are equally important. If we could find a way to balance those two, I think the world could be a much better place. But what are your views?

A. I believe America has that balance right now. Every society has news that is appalling. Crime, poverty, injustices are found in every society to varying degrees. When people are truly free they can reach their full potential. If we as a society want to meet the needs of the less fortunate, we need to elevate our standards. Morals are just as important as economics.

What kind of divisions in society are we experiencing today that are similar to those during Vietnam?
Q. What kind of divisions in society are we experiencing today that are similar to those during Vietnam? Why was the nation so divided during this war?

A. Support for the war against terror has dwindled, in spite of continued terrorist attacks by those we are at war with. The atmosphere does remind me so much of the anti-war days during the Vietnam Conflict. Vietnam was a war of the liberals and once they got into it there was no way they could get out. Opposition to the war grew consistently until the liberals were defeated and the conservatives were able to end the war. It is so sad that this version of anti-war is not motivated by the threat of draft notices, while the same level of cowardice thrives within it. L8r
